Sometimes there really is an addition by subtraction, as the Giants have been awarded a third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
In the case of New York losing Xavier McKinney in free agency during the 2024 offseason, there was simply subtraction -- as the safety went on to have a Pro Bowl season with the Green Bay Packers.
But thanks to the complex formula developed by the NFL Management Council to compensate teams for the loss of players in free agency, Big Blue has been awarded the 99th overall selection, the league announced on Tuesday.
The Giants were one of 15 teams to be awarded a total of 35 compensatory picks. (The Jets were not awarded any picks.) No team can be awarded more than four picks in a given year and Miami, Baltimore, San Francisco, and Dallas all hit that number this year. New York was among the six teams to receive a third-round pick.
Big Blue now has eight selections in this year's draft: 3rd overall (Round 1), 34th overall (Round 2), 65th overall (Round 3), 99th overall (Round 3 - Comp), 105th overall (Round 4), 154th overall (Round 5 - via Seattle), 219th overall (Round 7), 246th overall (Round 7 - via Buffalo).
McKinney, who signed a four-year, $68 million deal with the Packers on this day one year ago, appeared in all 17 games last season and had eight interceptions to go along with 88 tackles (60 solo) with a sack, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
A second-round selection (No. 36 overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft, McKinney played four seasons with the Giants appearing in 49 games (46 starts) totaling 279 total tackles (including six tackles for loss), 27 passes defended, nine interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 1.5 sacks and scoring one touchdown.
