The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency decided to disclose the suspect’s name, age and photos on its website on March 12, identifying the teacher as 48-year-old Myung Jae-wan. Myung’s information will remain public until April 11.

According to the police agency, the decision was made after a deliberation committee held a day earlier, considering the gravity of the alleged crime and views of bereaved family members. Police added that Myung did not raise any objections.

On Feb 10, Myung was found beside the student, Kim Ha-neul, with multiple stab wounds that are believed to have been self-inflicted.

Kim was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to excessive bleeding. Myung was arrested by authorities last week after receiving medical treatment.

Police suspect that Myung planned the crime, as it was found she had purchased her weapon beforehand at a supermarket near the school. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
