‘Unlike anything that's ever been done’: Omar Berrada left ‘amazed’ by one feature of Man Utd’s new stadium

Manchester United are heading towards the end of a disappointing season but there is some real buzz around the club’s proposed new stadium.

Ruben Amorim is busy focusing on Thursday night as Manchester United take on Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s focus is elsewhere though with United announcing plans for a new stadium on Tuesday.

United now plan to leave Old Trafford for a brand new 100,000-seater stadium nearby.

Gary Neville has been impressed with United’s stadium plans with Ratcliffe looking to build an ‘intimidating’ arena.

United hope to have the stadium built by 2030 and whilst the design has split opinion, there is excitement around this new chapter for the club.

Berrada feels that the canopy over the stadium and presenting room for a museum, stores and bars – as seen on United’s official website – is ‘quite unique’.

Berrada added that the design is ‘unlike anything that’s ever been done in the world of football’, highlighting the canopy feature.

The United CEO added that this new stadium will become an ‘iconic monument’, believing that fans will flock from all over the world to visit.

“The bit that amazed me the most is the canopy. This concept of having a canopy that sits above the stadium and covers the outside area, I think is quite unique, and the design itself, you know, is going to be unlike anything that’s ever been done in the world of football,” said Berrada.

“I think we will have people from all over the world wanting to come to see it, because it’s going to be an iconic monument, not just an iconic football stadium,” he added.

Omar Berrada on preserving Manchester United history

Berrada also spoke about preserving the club’s history and tradition despite leaving Old Trafford.

Fans are concerned that the essence of the club being lost by moving away from such an iconic home and heading to a brand new stadium.

Berrada attempted to allay those fears though, believing that the location of the new stadium – mere yards from Old Trafford – shows that United are attempting to stay true to tradition.

Berrada added that he and United want to take elements from Old Trafford into the new home in order to pay respect to the club’s history.

“We want to preserve the essence of this amazing club,” said Berrda. “The fact that it will be built right next to the current stadium, Old Trafford, staying in the same area that the club has played in for the last 115 years. I think it speaks to that and we want to make sure that we incorporate elements within the design that respect and speak to the history and the legacy of this club, which is, as you know, very, very important and quite unique in the world of sports,” he added.

Saying goodbye to Old Trafford will be painful for United fans, but a bright future at a new home appears to be on the horizon.
