Chelsea have three players fighting for futures and it starts against Copenhagen

So much is riding on Chelsea's Conference League round of 16 second-leg against Copenhagen on Thursday evening in a season-defining game for the Blues.

Given the nature of the competition, and with no disrespect intended, the quality of teams involved in Europe's third biggest tournament, Chelsea are huge favourites to be lifting the trophy in May. However, it was not straightforward in Denmark last week as the Blues edged past Copenhagen 2-1 to give themselves a slight advantage going into this week's decisive match at Stamford Bridge.

This season, the competition has given head coach Enzo Maresca an opportunity to rotate his squad and hand the so-called fringe players some much-needed first team minutes. Many thought as soon as Chelsea got into the knockout stages that the approach from Maresca may have changed but last Thursday's win in the Danish capital proved that was not the case.

With this all being said, football.london takes a look at three Chelsea players that will have a heavy reliance on the Conference League between now and the end of the season to fight for their place at the club ahead of the summer transfer window.

Trevoh Chalobah

After being told he could leave the club last summer, Chalobah was recalled from his loan spell at Crystal Palace in January because of numerous injuries Chelsea had in the centre-back department. It made sense at the time, but with those players recently returning from their respective problems, it means Chalobah has unfortunately fallen back down the pecking order.

There is no doubting he will play the odd game in the Premier League, and the fact he can be used at full-back as well is an advantage for the 25-year-old. However, the Conference League looks to be the platform he needs to prove his worth to the Chelsea bosses.

The summer is set to be another transfer window full of speculation over Chalobah and his future at Stamford Bridge. He has proved to be a highly consistent option whenever he has been called upon since returning from Selhurst Park but he remains a back-up player for Maresca. Last week, Chalobah started on the right-hand side of defence, with Reece James in midfield and Malo Gusto pushing high up the pitch - essentially meaning he was a right centre-back in a defensive trio.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

At the moment, as brutal as it is, you wonder what Dewsbury-Hall adds to this Chelsea team. He has been used in a variety of different positions but each time you watch him play, he does not seem to add much to the defence or the attack.

In his defence, Dewsbury-Hall makes intelligent runs off the ball, trying to navigate a way in behind the opposition, but is often ignored by his teammates. The Conference League is where the 26-year-old has played the majority of his minutes since signing for the Blues and Thursday night's match at Stamford Bridge is another significant one for the midfielder to try and force his way into Maresca's plans.

At the moment, however, it looks set to be a one-season spell for Dewsbury-Hall in west London. If he cannot show something between now and the end of the campaign, Chelsea will surely look to move him on before his value plummets even more.

Christopher Nkunku

Another man who has been used in various different roles and positions this season. Maresca has said all along that he believes Nkunku is best suited and the most natural in the No.10 but recent evidence has not backed up the head coach's claims.

While he remains Chelsea's joint-top scorer this season with 14 goals, the France international has found the back of the net just once in his last eight matches in all competitions. There was mass speculation over his future in the January transfer window with both Bayern Munich and Manchester United interested in making a move for the 27-year-old but Chelsea wanted to keep hold of him.

Come the summer, though, if he cannot establish one position as his own, then there may be some tough decisions around the corner.
