Summary

Messi and Ronaldo lead with eight UCL hat-tricks, solidifying their status as top scorers in the competition's history.

Players like Neymar and Mbappé with three hat-tricks each, have also made their mark in the Champions League.

The UEFA Champions League is Europe’s premier competition and is regarded by many as the biggest trophy to win in club football. The tournament has seen the world’s greatest-ever players compete against each other, including the most illustrious goalscorers. The 2024/25 season has already seen 11 different players score a hat-trick, adding their names to a long list of individuals who have achieved the feat in the competition.

Those who have recorded multiple hat-tricks are part of a smaller pool of players, with some impressive names netting three times or more on at least two occasions. Players who have not made the list may surprise a few, with Mohamed Salah and Vinícius Jr among those still on one hat-trick. Vinícius scored three in Real Madrid’s comeback victory against Borussia Dortmund earlier this season, while Salah netted his in Liverpool’s 7-1 win against Rangers in 2022. Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimović remained on one, while Luis Suárez never managed to score a Champions League hat-trick, despite having the fifth-most this century.

A total of 15 players have hit two Champions League hat-tricks, meaning 24 overall have recorded multiple trebles. Several iconic names feature, as well as some current stars. The youngest, however, is Erling Haaland, who is destined to score plenty more hat-tricks in the coming years. He netted his first at just 19 years old, for RB Salzburg in a 6-2 win over Genk. His second came for Manchester City, and perhaps it is a surprise he has not scored more given his historic goalscoring record. He has scored a remarkable 49 goals in 48 Champions League appearances.

There is an abundance of Premier League representation, with the likes of Sergio Agüero, Gabriel Jesus, Andy Cole, Michael Owen and Olivier Giroud included. Man City pair Agüero and Jesus net both of their trebles for the club, while neighbours Manchester United boast Cole as a multi hat-trick getter. He was the first player ever to hit two. Owen achieved the feat for both United and Liverpool and Giroud did it for London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. His latest was a four-goal outing for Chelsea at Sevilla, on their way to their 2021 victory.

Harry Kane was just the third Englishman to score two hat-tricks, first for Tottenham, before scoring four in Bayern Munich’s 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb earlier this campaign. Chelsea legend Didier Drogba recorded one each for Marseille and the Blues, joined by fellow African icon Samuel Eto’o, who represented Barcelona and Inter Milan. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored his first treble for PSV Eindhoven in 1998, before repeating the feat for Man United in 2004, netting four times.

Spurs flop Roberto Soldado may be a surprising inclusion, but the Spaniard was a force to be reckoned with in his Valencia days, hitting hat-tricks in consecutive seasons in 2011 and 2012. Brazilian forward Adriano features, both times for Inter. Marco Simone did so for rivals AC, before scoring three for Monaco in a 5-0 win over Sturm Graz. Andriy Shevchenko scored his seven years apart, one for Dynamo Kyiv and another for AC Milan in 2005. Dutchman Roy Makaay completes this list, having netted first for Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna and then Bayern Munich.

3 Hat-Tricks

Filippo Inzaghi, Mario Gomez, Luiz Adriano, Kylian Mbappé, Neymar Jr

Five different players have recorded three Champions League hat-tricks. The first to do so was Filippo Inzaghi, who achieved the feat in September 2002. The Italian scored the third while playing for AC Milan after recording the first two with Juventus. In total, he scored 46 goals in 81 Champions League appearances, winning the competition twice, both at Milan.

German striker Mario Gomez scored his third and final hat-trick in 2012, in a 7-0 win for Bayern Munich over Basel in the Round of 16 second leg, en route to the final. This came just four months after his second, which was against Napoli in the group stages of the same season. He scored all three in a 3-2 win. He delivered his first in a group game in the 2010/11 season, where he scored three of Bayern’s four goals in a victory over CFR Cluj.

Two of Luiz Adriano’s hat-tricks came in consecutive games for Shakhtar Donetsk, making him the third player to do this. Both were against BATE Borisov in the group stages, who were glad to see the back of him. The first fixture at home saw the Brazilian net five times, meaning he scored eight goals in just two matches.

Kylian Mbappé added his third hat-trick on the most recent matchday, putting three past Ederson in Real Madrid’s second-leg playoff victory against Manchester City. His first two were in the colours of PSG, the first in 2019, a 4-1 group win over Club Brugge, before doing so once more two years later in a knockout victory against Barcelona. Mbappé is almost certain to add to his tally and is perhaps the biggest threat to Messi and Ronaldo’s record. Mbappé’s former PSG teammate Neymar also makes the list with three, doing it twice with the Parisiens and once with Barcelona.

Top 20 Champions League Goalscorers of All Time (Ranked)

Some of the greatest players in football history have played in the Champions League. Here are the highest scorers the competition has ever seen.

4 Hat-Tricks

Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema with the Champions League trophy

Another Real Madrid legend, Karim Benzema, has an excellent European pedigree with four Champions League hat-tricks. The Frenchman is one of the most decorated players in competition history with five trophies and is also one of the most prolific goalscorers. All four hat-tricks came in the white of Real Madrid, where he scored 78 goals in 133 matches. His first came in the final group stage match of the 2010/11 season, in a 4-0 win over Auxerre. It took five years for the striker to record his second, and it came in a thumping 8-0 victory against Malmö. This game will be particularly remembered for being the only Champions League tie in which two players scored a hat-trick, as his teammate Ronaldo also netted four.

Benzema’s third and fourth hat-tricks came seven years later but occurred in consecutive games. He scored all three in Real’s last-16 second-leg victory over PSG before scoring another treble in their first-leg quarter-final against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. These took place in the 21/22 campaign, which resulted in his fifth and final winner’s medal. His performances that year also led to a Ballon d’Or triumph.

6 Hat-Tricks

Robert Lewandowski

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski

Another of the most accomplished forwards in Champions League history, Robert Lewandowski, has scored six hat-tricks. The Polish striker has won the competition once with Bayern Munich, and at age 36 still has an opportunity to catch Messi and Ronaldo on eight hat-tricks. Lewandowski is the only player to score a hat-trick for three different clubs, having done so for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern and his current side Barcelona. He is also a one-time Golden Boot winner.

His first treble came in Dortmund’s incredible 4-1 first-leg win in the semi-finals against Real Madrid in 2013. Lewandowski scored all four in this one. His most recent came in the group stages in the 2021/22 season, in which he netted three in a 5-1 win against Viktoria Plzen for Barcelona.

8 Hat-Tricks

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo

No shocks here as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are both tied for most hat-tricks in Champions League history with eight apiece. They are also the two top scorers in competition history, with Ronaldo leading the way with 140 and Messi in second with 129. The pair are widely regarded as the two best players of all time, though who comes first has always garnered much debate.

Messi reached the milestone first, recording his eighth treble in a 4-0 Barcelona win against PSV Eindhoven in 2018. The Argentinian has scored four or more goals on two occasions. The first was his first-ever hat-trick, scoring four goals in a knockout win over Arsenal. He also scored five goals against Bayer Leverkusen in a 7-1 victory, making him one of three players to do so. Following his departure from Spain, he moved to PSG where he scored nine goals in Europe, but no hat-tricks. He is now plying his trade in MLS with Inter Miami, meaning his European journey is all but over.

It is a similar story for Ronaldo, who is enjoying his time with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. His last Champions League hat-trick came in 2019, where he scored all three in a 3-0 Juventus victory against Atlético Madrid. This was the only treble he netted with the Italians, having scored seven for Real Madrid. Ronaldo has scored four hat-tricks in the knockout phase of the tournament, twice more than any other player. He is also one of three players to score a hat-trick in back-to-back games, having done so in consecutive matches against Bayern Munich and Atlético in the 2016/17 season.
