Has Sterling played his last game for Arsenal?

The fact that Kieran Tierney a left-back was brought on ahead of Raheem Sterling when Arsenal needed a goal against Manchester United in the Premier League at the weekend has led to hypothesise that the England winger has played his last game for the club.

When he was signed on transfer deadline day from Chelsea on loan for the season, commentors argued that it was a shrewd acquisition, bringing somebody with vast experience who could supplement the Gunners attacking option. And with Chelsea subsidising half his wages it also seemed a bargain.

The reality is that Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made the right call in letting him go, and that ts a player in terminal decline. A recent article by a respected journalist suggested that once players have passed the 500 game mark, they begin to drop in effectiveness and productivity, and, because Sterling passed that mark some time ago, his decline also started earlier.

Arsenal’s threadbare attacking options means he may yet get more game time, perhaps in the second leg of their Champions League fixture with PSV that is now a dead rubber. But it is also clear he will be heading back to Stamford Bridge then at the end of the season, and it will be Chelsea’s problem what to do with him then.
