West Ham’s sick-note supremo is struck down again

I make no apology for the title. Readers just have to understand the notion of my gallows humour and tongue-in-cheek article to lift the gloom – slightly – the afternoon after the Hammers surrendered meekly to a Newcastle side with one eye on a Wembley final.

Ironically, just yesterday my article detailing Maxwel Cornet finally finding his feet in Italian side Genoa and putting in a couple of good appearances with consecutive goals- after his shaky start with yet more muscle injuries – must have tempted fate a little too far.

News reported today from Sport Witness confirms:

“The West Ham loanee has picked up a thigh flexor injury and will not return to action soon. He will be assessed for fitness over the next few weeks and that will determine when he can return to action. The early indication is that things are not looking good and there is no exact timeframe over a return.

Considering his form for Genoa, it would come as very disappointing news for Cornet, who had fallen short of game time during his loan at Southampton earlier in the season. Just when things were going right, they have gone wrong again.”

There I was getting all optimistic that Genoa would want to keep Cornet as a makeweight in a West Ham deal for their defender Koni De Winter: If past form is anything to go by, Cornet won’t reappear until the end of the season now.

There seems a perpetual cycle of doom with Cornet which means he is unable to string more than a couple of games together without breaking down.

This has been the case before, during and after his inclusion in West Ham’s squad and surely, at the end of this season it is time to cut the losses – and his contract – in half and say goodbye to the signing that must go down as one of West Ham’s worst ever.
