Liverpool have been knocked out of the Champions League after losing to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Reds had a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, where goalkeeper Alisson Becker was their standout player.
On Tuesday, PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé scored in the 12th minute, and it ended with a 1-0 win for the visitors. With an aggregate score of 1-1, the outcome of the two-legged tie was decided via a penalty shootout.
Alisson wasn’t able to stop any of PSG’s four shots. After the tie, the stopper had a chat with TNT Sports Brazil and ESPN in Brazil have relayed his comments.
PSG dominated in the first leg in Paris but still ended up losing to Liverpool, who had one shot on target. The 32-year-old insists Liverpool deserved to win in tie at Anfield but not the one in Paris.
“Based on our performance today, we definitely [fell on our feet],” he said.
“In the first leg, we didn’t deserve anything, not even the win, to be honest. And today, maybe we deserved the win. We couldn’t do it, their team also defended with everything they had, throwing themselves at the ball, the goalkeeper had a great game. Then, anything can happen on a penalty.”
The Brazil international has warned his Liverpool teammates to put the Champions League elimination behind them and focus on the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United on Sunday.
“It’s always difficult to be eliminated, but we don’t have time to complain. Today is a day for us to think about everything we could have done better, but tomorrow we’ll already have our focus on the final, which is very important at the end of the week,” Alisson explained.
The shoutout against PSG was the goalkeeper’s first one at Anfield since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2018.
“It was the first time at Anfield for me, many years here, but the first penalty situation,” he added.
“I had a few with the national team, in the FA Cup [final against Chelsea in 2022], we won, a different situation. I had successes, failures, penalties depend on a lot of things.”
“Everything is very focused on the goalkeepers, but also on the takers. And anything can happen. I try to prepare myself in the best way to make the best decisions. It’s not always what brings us success and today was the case.”
