A high-level parliamentary delegation from Madagascar, led by Justin Tokely, President of the National Assembly of Madagascar, met with Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday to further enhance the historical and strategic ties between the two nations.
During the meeting, speaker Birla provided an overview of the functioning of the Indian parliament, focusing on the ongoing Budget Session and the crucial role played by parliamentary committees. He highlighted the importance of these committees in shaping the legislative process, particularly as the second phase of the budget session progresses. Birla also shared insights into India’s democratic framework, emphasizing its status as the “Mother of Democracy.”
Birla expressed the importance of the long-standing relationship between India and Madagascar, built on centuries of trade, cultural exchanges, and mutual cooperation. He recognized Madagascar as a key partner for India in the Indian Ocean region, underscoring the partnership’s role in enhancing regional stability and economic prosperity.
Addressing the significance of high-level visits, Birla stated, “Visits such as these help to further solidify the bilateral ties between India and Madagascar, which are deeply rooted in history. India is always ready for cooperation with countries in the Indian Ocean region, in alignment with our vision of SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region).” He also reiterated India’s commitment to the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which views the world as one family, and reaffirmed India’s leadership in offering assistance to neighboring countries, particularly during times of crises.
Birla further highlighted the capabilities of the Lok Sabha’s training arm, PRIDE (Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies), and offered tailored training programs to enhance the legislative and parliamentary skills of Madagascan parliamentarians.
