Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher claimed Liverpool were immediately on the backfoot vs PSG after a controversial coin toss.
The Reds fell to their French opponents on Wednesday evening, the away side winning on penalties after a 1-0 success on the night. Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones both missed for Liverpool, with Mohamed Salah being the only one to find the net for the hosts.
But Carragher was left baffled by the pre-penalty shootout conversation between Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, PSG skipper Marquinhos and the referee. A coin was flipped, which the French side won, choosing to take the penalties at the Anfield Road end of the stadium.
But interestingly, PSG then stepped up to take the first penalty of the shootout which was successfully converted by Vitinha. Speaking about that, Carragher said: “One thing I couldn’t work out with the penalties was, obviously there was a coin toss with Virgil van Dijk [and PSG’s captain].

“PSG must’ve won it to take it to the other end [away from the Kop] but then also took the first penalty. So I wasn’t quite sure what happened there. Normally you only get one advantage and the other team gets the first penalty… but PSG deserved to go through.”
While Carragher was confused about Liverpool’s double disadvantage against PSG, he was soon offered clarification by former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg. Speaking on commentary, he said: “I think Liverpool would love it at the Kop of course but it’s down to the referee.
“It’s the referee’s call on which side it is on the coin. It will be one side for one side of the coin and the other side of the pitch for the other side of the coin.

“Then the captains will decide and if he’s the lucky one he’ll decide either to take the first or second penalty. But it’s the referee’s call on the first coin toss at which end it will be.”
Clattenburg was then asked whether the police had the power to change the location of the penalties due to any potential trouble between the opposing groups of supporters. And he suggested they did but due to their being little hostility between the stands, it was unlikely for the end to be switched just moments before kick-off.
And PSG fans made sure to take full advantage of the decision. One French supporter was heard shouting through a megaphone in support of his side, while he could be heard booing and playing a siren as Liverpool stars stepped up to take their own efforts.
