Arrowheadlines: Chiefs graded a ‘B-’ for free agency efforts

The latest

2025 NFL free agency team-by-team grades: Vikings, Patriots, Bears earn high marks after Day 2 - CBSSports.com

Kansas City Chiefs: B-

Key additions: OT Jaylon Moore, RB Elijah Mitchell, CB Kristian Fulton

Key re-signings: OG Trey Smith (franchise tag), LB Nick Bolton, WR Marquise Brown, P Matt Araiza

Key departures: OG Joe Thuney (trade via Bears), S Justin Reid (Saints), WR DeAndre Hopkins (Ravens)

After the O-line was pummeled in Super Bowl LIX, you know it was going to be a key point of emphasis for the Chiefs this offseason. Before the start of free agency, they hit starting guard Trey Smith with the franchise tag and then signed former 49er Jaylon Moore to be their starting left tackle. Blindside tackle was an area of weakness for Kansas City, so the club hopes it filled that hole here with Moore. Meanwhile, keeping Nick Bolton is an underrated re-signing given how impactful he’s been in the middle of their defense.

Saints expected to sign ex-Chiefs safety Justin Reid to three-year, $31.5 million contract | NFL.com

Former Chiefs standout safety Justin Reid is expected to sign a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the Saints, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday. Reid’s agreement includes $22.5 million in money that is fully guaranteed at signing, per Rapoport.

Reid’s move to New Orleans follows the same path charted by another current Saints safety, Tyrann Mathieu, who went from Houston to Kansas City and then New Orleans. Mathieu agreed to a reworked contract to remain in New Orleans on Tuesday, and just a few hours later, news of Reid’s impending arrival followed.

Ravens signing former Chiefs WR DeAndre Hopkins to one-year, $6 million contract | NFL.com

Baltimore is signing the three-time All-Pro wideout to a one-year, $6 million contract, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday.

Hopkins, 32, joined Kansas City via trade from the Tennessee Titans midseason in 2024 and contributed in spurts but failed to emerge as a massive difference maker for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Hopkins finished his most recent campaign with 56 catches for 610 yards and five touchdowns — 41 receptions, 437 yards and four TDs coming in 10 games as a member of the Chiefs.

QB Daniel Jones finalizing 1-year deal with Colts, sources say | ESPN

Free agent quarterback Daniel Jones is finalizing a one-year, $14 million contract with the Indianapolis Colts, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

Jones had a chance to return to the Minnesota Vikings but now becomes the challenger to 2023 first-round pick Anthony Richardson for the Colts’ starting quarterback job in 2025.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said last month at the NFL scouting combine that Indianapolis was planning to have an open competition at the quarterback position, adding that as Richardson “continues to progress in his young career, us adding competition, I think, will help up everybody’s game.”

Source — Bills, Joey Bosa agree on 1-year, $12.6 million deal | ESPN

Five-time Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa reached agreement Tuesday night on a one-year, $12.6 million deal with the Buffalo Bills, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Los Angeles Chargers released Bosa last Wednesday, cutting ties with their longest-tenured player and one of the best in franchise history. After making four Pro Bowls in his first six seasons, Bosa has been plagued by injuries since but was selected to his fifth Pro Bowl in 2024, albeit as an alternate.

Chiefs Roster: Left tackle Jaylon Moore could be a player on the rise

Run blocking and plays in space

The 49ers’ entire offensive scheme revolves around successfully running the football, requiring competent blocking. In their smash mouth scheme, Moore excelled in situations where he needed to perform down blocks alone or in combination with others — and when needing to win blocks on the outside.

I like the down block here from Moore. The 3-tech is already starting to slant inside, and Moore puts a solid shot on him throws him out of the picture, and opens a lane for the RB. pic.twitter.com/tZys6uw42h

With San Fransisco running a power look, Moore is responsible for the B-gap player. With a crisp first step and active feet after, he makes contact and drives the 3-technique out of the gap, opening up a big running lane. He finishes the play with some authority.
