Everton manager David Moyes quipped he didn’t know there was a game on when he attended a showing of Blood Brothers at the Empire Theatre on Tuesday night But one of his players was present at Anfield to witness Liverpool’s Champions League exit alongside a former team-mate.

Along with bitter rivals Manchester United, Liverpool are one of only two clubs to have been crowned champions of England and Europe in the same season twice (1977 and 1984 in their case, 1999 and 2008 for the Red Devils).

However, despite being set to lift a first title in front of fans for 35 years in May as they currently enjoy a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League and also being hot favourites to secure an 11th League Cup when they face Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday, Arne Slot’s side’s hopes of an historic third domestic/continental ‘double’ came to an abrupt halt with their shock elimination from the competition.

Following a smash and grab 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital last week when a string of saves from Alisson Becker kept the Reds in the tie despite the hosts dominating for long periods, most of their fanbase and the wider footballing world expected them to progress for a quarter-final showdown against either Aston Villa or Club Brugge.

However, with Ousmane Dembele netting the only goal of the night at Anfield, Liverpool were beaten 4-1 on penalties – their first-ever shoot-out defeat in Europe on home turf.

Blues boss Moyes was of course in the city centre, honouring Bill Kenwright, at a gala stage event where a bust of the late Everton chairman was unveiled and when asked by a reporter “Is this one way to avoid watching the Liverpool game tonight?”, joked: “I didn’t know there was a game on tonight, is there?”

However, Idrissa Gueye was in the crowd at Anfield, watching Liverpool take on his previous club, Paris Saint-Germain. The 35-year-old had a three-year spell with PSG from 2019-22, in between his two spells at Goodison Park.

Gueye was joined by his former Everton and Senegal team-mate Oumar Niasse, who despite being seven months younger than him, hasn’t had a club since a short spell at Macclesfield last season. Also sat with the pair in an image shared on social media, was Russian mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov, sporting a PSG hooded jacket.
