Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas has compared Ange Postecoglou to Mikel Arteta.
Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a trophy this season all rest on Thursday night when they have a Europa League round of 16 second leg against AZ Alkmaar.
They lost 1-0 in the first leg of the tie, in what was a shock result for Ange Postecoglou’s side. The Spurs boss will now hope that his players can deliver at home and come back from the 1-0 deficit on Thursday.
With the side 13th in the Premier League table, there is significant pressure on Postecoglou, who famously said at the start of the season that he always wins a trophy in his second season.
Gallas says Postecoglou is “in trouble” at Tottenham
Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas is one of the few who played for both sides of the North London Derby. So he knows better than anyone, the pressures of playing for both Spurs and the Gunners. He was asked about Postecoglou this season, and made the comparison to Mikel Arteta, saying that the Spurs boss could be “in trouble” regarding his future.
Gallas told Prime Casino: “It looks like whatever Ange is telling his players, they’re not listening anymore. His message doesn't go through anymore.
“It’s completely different to Arteta – he got his team to perform consistently – but with Ange, the players nought into the football for the first half of last season and ever since it’s been a disaster. Now he's in trouble."
They play in the Europa League on Thursday night, and are trying to keep their hopes of a trophy alive.
Who could take over if Ange Postecoglou is sacked?
Daniel Levy would not be expected to decide on Postecoglou’s future before the end of the season, but over the summer, he could choose to part ways with the former Celtic manager.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been touted due to the job that he’s done with the Cherries this season. They are currently ninth in the Premier League, just three points off fifth, which is expected to provide Champions League football.
Iraola likes to play a high-pressing, attractive brand of football, something that the Spurs fans like about Postecoglou’s attacking approach to the game.
Brentford man Thomas Frank is also an option, as a slightly more stable manager. He has spent the last seven years at Brentford, helping them get promoted to the Premier League, and become an established top-flight side.
Finally, Mauricio Pochettino is currently without a club job, he is managing the USA International team. If the chance at a return to Spurs was possible, there is a chance that he could be tempted to come back, due to the success that he had in North London.
