Andy Robertson has admitted that Liverpool have 'a lot of tired legs' ahead of facing Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.
Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG following a painful penalty shootout defeat at Anfield on Tuesday. It was a taxing night for Liverpool, who have a day less than Newcastle to prepare for Sunday's Wembley showpiece, after Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off with an ankle injury while Alisson, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah all played 120 minutes after the game went to extra time.
Whatever about the physical impact of the defeat, though, emotionally, this was a night where Mohamed Salah was left in tears and a crestfallen Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones were both consoled at full-time by Arne Slot following the pair's misses in the shootout. Slot was the first to admit that the defeat had been a 'shock' to the system, after his side's treble dream went up in smoke, but the Liverpool boss suggested playing a final so soon afterwards was 'mentally the best thing you can ask for' as his side look to bounce back.
Those words were echoed by Virgil van Dijk, who told his team-mates to keep their 'chins up and get ready for the next challenge'. However, van Dijk stressed the focus had to be on recovery because 'everyone has to do that in order to be at their best on the weekend against a very good Newcastle'. Robertson was well-aware of that.
"There's a lot of tired legs in there," the Scotland international told Amazon Prime Video Sport as he blew out his cheeks. "We need to recover properly, we need to get ready to go, but we will be. We enjoy cup finals. They are the biggest games."
