Virgil van Dijk admitted that his future was no closer to being resolved, despite being spotted speaking with Paris Saint-Germain chiefs following their Champions League victory over Liverpool. The Dutchman revealed that discussions are ongoing between his representatives and Liverpool as his current contract, set to expire on June 30, draws closer to its end.
The Reds' captain admitted his uncertainty about whether he will remain at Anfield to lead the team in the next season. Liverpool are also engaged in contract negotiations with top scorer Mohamed Salah and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are set to become free agents this summer.
Salah is seeking a longer-term contract with better financial terms than what Liverpool has offered so far, while Alexander-Arnold is widely anticipated to move to Real Madrid, who had a £20million bid for the England star turned down in January.
The ongoing deadlock in talks has sparked rumours that van Dijk has secretly agreed to stay with Liverpool, with both parties keeping quiet out of respect for the negotiations with Salah and Alexander-Arnold.
However, 33-year-old van Dijk has dismissed these claims, insisting that his focus is on winning the Carabao Cup and securing the title in Liverpool's remaining 10 matches.
When questioned about whether he would return next season for another shot at the Champions League following Liverpool's penalty shoot-out exit to PSG, the Dutch centre-back responded: "I've no idea.
"I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment. Talks aren't on hold, nothing's on hold. I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go and that's my full focus.
"If there is news you guys will know it. I don't even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes, but that's about it.
"At the moment I don't even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they're lying to your face."
