Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount participated in team training at Carrington on Wednesday morning ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash with Real Sociedad.

Mount has been absent for three months through injury, last featuring when he was forced off in the first half of United's 2-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on December 15. He has experienced a torrid time with injury issues since joining the club in July 2023.

Head coach Ruben Amorim will speak to the media ahead of the tussle with Sociedad on this lunchtime and could issue an update on Mount's condition. It remains to be seen whether he will be in contention for the clash with the Spanish outfit.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte also took part in training after missing last week's first leg with Sociedad and Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal. Amorim said last week that United could not afford to take any risks with the Uruguayan.

Defenders Leny Yoro and Harry Maguire were both absent. Yoro was taken off at half-time on Sunday and Maguire has missed both of United's last two games.

United's season will be over if they fail to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Out of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and sitting 14th in the Premier League table, winning the Europa League is the only hope United have of salvaging something from this miserable season.

Despite their wretched form domestically, United are the only unbeaten side in this season's Europa League. A stuttering start saw them record three draws from their first three outings of the league phase but they won all of their remaining five matches.

United's tie with Sociedad is finely poised after last week's 1-1 draw at the Reale Arena. United dominated large spells of the match and took a deserved lead through Joshua Zirkzee in the second half.

However, a dubious handball decision against Bruno Fernandes offered Mikel Oyarzabal the chance to convert from the spot and he made no mistake. With the aways goals rule no longer in place, if a winner can't be found in 90 minutes tomorrow night then the tie will head to extra time and possibly penalties.

Chido Obi also featured in the open training session but he will be unavailable for selection against Sociedad after being left out of the Reds' revised Europa League squad.
