Liverpool exited the UEFA Champions League at the hands of PSG, a game that could be Virgil van Dijk’s last in Europe for the Reds.
The Anfield captain’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season with Van Dijk and Liverpool yet to come to any sort of agreement over a new deal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah in a similar position.
With Real Madrid and Bayern Munich now interested in Van Dijk, the chances of the Dutch defender leaving Merseyside are growing by the day, with Liverpool players now becoming unsettled about the situation.
And Van Dijk has added some more layers to the contract saga after speaking to the press about his new deal having been seen talking to PSG’s president and sporting director.

Virgil van Dijk addresses contract situation after talking with PSG’s sporting director
Speaking to the media, the Liverpool captain said there is no updates on his new contract, with Van Dijk speaking to reporters after being seen talking to Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Luis Campos as per Josue Casse, with the latter having a good relationship with the former Southampton defender.
With interest from top European clubs in Van Dijk beginning to grow, a move to PSG isn’t out of the question for the 33-year-old centre-back, especially if the Parisian side go all the way in this year’s Champions League.
And when asked about his contract, Van Dijk gave a stark but concerning update about his Liverpool future, with time running out for the Reds to hand their captain a new deal with the season ending in just under two months.
Van Dijk said: “If there is news, guys, you will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it. At the moment, I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.”

Could Virgil van Dijk actually leave Liverpool this summer?
Heading into 2025, Van Dijk looked to be the safest bet out of the three Liverpool contract rebels in regards to who would remain with the Anfield side beyond this season, with Alexander-Arnold likely to join Real Madrid and Salah’s situation still being kept in the dark.
Yet since the closure of the January transfer window, Van Dijk’s contract has become a more worrying situation for Liverpool, with no agreement yet to be reached between the Reds or their star centre-back.
With Van Dijk now coming out publically about his contract and being seen meeting with PSG’s sporting director, Liverpool could be about to see one of the greatest-ever players leave for nothing, a situation that would be disastrous for the Anfield side.
