The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has ordered the arrest of the son of a senior police officer, who has been accused of accepting bribes in exchange for helping criminals evade legal action.

The suspect is the son of the acting Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Jaffna Police Station, raising concerns over corruption within law enforcement in the Tamil homeland.

According to [reports](https://jvpnews.com/article/cop-s-son-arrested-for-bribery-in-jaffna-1741644876), multiple complaints were lodged with the Jaffna District Crime Prevention Police Unit, alleging that the suspect had been taking money from individuals by falsely claiming that he could settle criminal cases with the police.

The suspect allegedly exploited his father’s senior position in the Jaffna police to mislead and extort individuals, promising them protection from legal action. Following the complaints, the police launched an investigation into his activities, but the suspect has since absconded.

With the suspect evading arrest, the police filed a case in the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court, which has now issued an order for his immediate arrest and production before the court.

Meanwhile the suspect’s father—the senior police officer in question—has been transferred to the Mullaitivu Police Division.

The case has once again exposed the deep-rooted corruption within Sri Lanka’s police force, particularly in the North-East, where Tamils continue to suffer under systemic discrimination, militarisation, and impunity.

The Sri Lankan police have long been accused of widespread corruption, bribery, and collusion with criminals, with Tamil civilians often bearing the brunt of these abuses. Many police officers in the North-East are Sinhala officers from the South, often acting without accountability, as the state continues to prioritise militarised policing over genuine law enforcement.

The police in Jaffna itself have been implicated in multiple cases of abuse, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and sexual violence against Tamis —particularly during and after the armed conflict.

Despite repeated allegations of corruption and criminal activity within the police force, few officers have ever been prosecuted
