The Buffalo Bills have restructured the contract of Ed Oliver to open up salary cap space, [per Over The Cap](https://overthecap.com/player/ed-oliver/7800). Oliver had the second-highest cap hit on the team at $20.675 million, but that has dropped by $10.4 million with the move.
In order to clear that much space, the Bills added two void years to Oliver’s contract. The NFL allows teams to prorate signing bonuses over the course of up to five years, so the two void years add to Oliver’s three remaining years on the deal. Buffalo converted almost all of Oliver’s $13.75 million base salary and spread it out over those five years, leaving just his minimum base salary.
The Bills were reportedly under the cap earlier this week after the Greg Rousseau extension lowered his cap hit, but in order to sign the new agreements when the new league year opens Wednesday, they needed some help.
This is likely not the last move. Dion Dawkins, Dawson Knox, Taron Johnson, and Curtis Samuel are all prime candidates to receiver this type of treatment. The player gets the money upfront and the team gets cap flexibility this year.
