Report: Matheus Cunha transfer to Liverpool from Wolves may hinge on one thing happening this…

It is widely expected that Matheus Cunha will leave Wolves this summer – and Liverpool have been linked with the Brazilian.

Cunha has a release clause of £62.5 million, which was agreed in the new contract he signed recently.

Even if Wolves stay up this season, there is a very strong chance that Cunha will leave.

Cunha recently got sent off against Bournemouth for scrapping with Milos Kerkez and that may be something that puts teams off. It’s thought Arsenal now have reservations about Cunha because of that.

But there will likely still be plenty of other clubs keen to sign him for the £62.5 million fee.

Liverpool are said to be considering Cunha, but it could take for one thing to happen for a move to materialise.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are interested in Cunha.

But he’s actually part of a three-man shortlist.

The Reds’ main target for the summer is said to be Alexander Isak, a player who has lit up the Premier League his season for Newcastle United.

Newcastle want to tie Isak down to a new deal though, and this is where things could be significant for Wolves.

If Newcastle do get Isak signed up to a new contract, then Liverpool are likely to shift their attention to alternatives.

Cunha is on their shortlist, as is Joao Pedro of Brighton.

It’s stated that ‘in case there’s no hope’ of signing Isak, Liverpool will look at the likes of Cunha and Pedro.

Cunha could follow Diogo Jota to Liverpool

It seems a question of which club Cunha will go to this summer, not if he goes to one.

The Brazilian has massively impressed again this season and despite his disciplinary options, he is bound to have several clubs willing to pay that release clause.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Isak and his contract at Newcastle. If he does agree fresh terms, Liverpool could easily come calling for Cunha.

Goals – 15

Assists – 4

And it would not be the first time a player has gone from Molineux to Anfield, with Diogo Jota making the move in the summer of 2020. Youngster Ayman Alvin also joined Liverpool from Wolves last year.

Jota has been fairly successful there so far, scoring 64 goals and making 22 assists in 173 games.

That success may be a factor for Cunha if Liverpool do show a willingness to pay the money this summer.
