MIPIM VIDEO | How can the regeneration of Old Trafford transform the wider borough?

The international brand appeal of Manchester United FC and the emergence of development potential in the surrounding area make Old Trafford an extremely attractive regeneration prospect, according to Savills director Jeremy Hinds and Trafford Council Leader Tom Ross.

The Old Trafford project and the regeneration of the surrounding Wharfside area presents a huge opportunity to better link Trafford’s district centres with Manchester city centre and Salford Quays. However, the project, billed as one of the UK’s largest, presents challenges.

“How do you get 100,000 people coming in and out [for games] and still have this place operating as an attractive residential area?” Hinds said.

The council’s proactive approach to planning through a series of framework documents will provide investors interested in getting involved in Trafford’s regeneration journey the certainty they require to deploy capital and “create a transformative area at the heart of one of the most successful cities in the UK,” Hinds added.

The Old Trafford opportunity, while no means the council’s only priority, is the fulcrum of its transformation plans.

“We very much have a sense of place at the heart of what we want to do,” Ross said.

“A lot is coming together in this area and this part of Trafford will be one of the leading growth areas in the borough.”
