Patriots get good news in hunt for ‘curious’ Cooper Kupp (report)

Cooper Kupp isn’t a free agent yet. But when he does hit the market, it sounds like the New England Patriots will have a chance at landing the star wide receiver.

The Patriots have a dire need for a receiver like Kupp and could be in the hunt. Apparently, the interest could be mutual.

Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald reports that Kupp “is curious about the prospect of playing in New England” and has let those around him know.

The 31-year-old Kupp isn’t quite the same player that dominated the NFL in 2021, when he went for almost 2,000 yards. However, he is a savvy receiver who could provide a reliable target for Drake Maye.

Kupp also has some connections to New England. Patriots tight ends coach Thomas Brown coached with the Rams from 2020-2022. Then there’s Kendrick Bourne, who was Kupp’s college teammate at Eastern Washington. According to Callahan, the two remain friendly."

So far, the Patriots have whiffed on all of their attempts to land a No. 1 wide receiver this offseason. Tee Higgins didn’t hit the market. Chris Godwin went back to the Buccaneers.

Kupp is toward the end of his career and might be trending downward. But right now, beggars can’t be choosers.

Last season, Kupp was limited to 12 games, catching 67 passes for 710 yards. No player in New England topped either of those numbers last season.

The Patriots will have the money to offer Kupp if he hits free agency as expected Wednesday.
