Van Dijk spoke to the media after his team’s elimination from the Champions League and was inadvertently asked about his future. Upon being asked on what he knows about his future at Anfield, the 33-year-old stated: “I don’t know what’s going to happen next season. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face. Contract on hold? Nothing on hold. I keep saying the same things. If there is news, you will know it. I don’t even know myself.”

Liverpool Face Race Against Time With Key Contract Extensions

Van Dijk’s new comments on his contract situation could be concerning for Liverpool fans. That is because he had claimed way back in October (2024) that he was in ongoing discussions with the club’s hierarchy over a new potential long-term contract. Over six months have passed since then and the Reds are yet to have shown an indication towards extending his contract.

On top of that, Liverpool are also facing uncertainty with the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. They have not been able to agree a new deal for the winger, who has 32 goals and 22 assists so far this season.

Alexander-Arnold has strongly been linked with a move to Real Madrid, and the Reds have not been reported to be closer to reaching a breakthrough on either of their contract extensions. Liverpool have also failed to extend the contract for Van Dijk who has helped Arne Slot’s side keep 19 clean sheets in 40 matches across all competitions in the 2024/25 season.
