Andy Robertson Relfects On Hard Work and Penalty “Lottery” Against PSG

After Tuesday night’s difficult defeat at Anfield to Paris Saint-Germain that sees [Liverpool](https://liverpooloffside.sbnation.com/) out of the [Champions League](https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league) at the Round of 16, there will be questions asked about whether some Liverpool players could have done better.

Nobody, though, will be asking such questions about left back Andy Robertson, who rolled back the years and delivered a vintage performance, all energy and endless running on the left flank. There was no question on the night that Robertson put in a shift.

“That’s the competition,” said a disappointed Robertson following the match. “Obviously we got the win last week without playing our best. I think we played much better today. That’s football, you can end up being on the wrong end of the result.

“But you can’t question the effort, the endeavour, everything we put into the game. It was two really good teams going at it and when it goes to penalties it’s always a lottery and unfortunately for us we’re on the wrong side of it.”

After Mohamed Salah converted Liverpool’s opening penalty comfortably, Darwin Nuñez and Curtis Jones—two substitutes who failed to make a positive impact despite coming on against a PSG side that looked as tired as Liverpool—both missed theirs.

Both deserve credit for stepping up and volunteering in a high pressure moment. If there are to be regrets and recriminations, they will be for Liverpool collectively letting it get to that point in a game they will feel they deserved more from.

“I can’t be prouder of the players, how much effort we put in,” Robertson added of a night that saw him and players like Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz leave it all on the pitch. “It’s just unfortunate that the efforts weren’t rewarded.”
