This is understood to herald a sweeping change in the boardroom dynamics and key shareholders are willing to play ball.
The American owners will also have a decision to make on who the new manager is, with Rafa Benitez also linked with the hot seat.

Dave King ready to sell major shareholding in Rangers International Football Club plc
For the takeover to go ahead, a lot of the main shareholders will be required to sell either most or all of their stake.
Dave King, who is the club’s single largest shareholding, is understood to be ready to sell his major shareholding in Rangers International Football Club plc.
Several other key figures will also sell a percentage of their stock to ensure that the 49ers have a 51 per cent stake.
It is essential that the NFL giants have their people on the club’s board as they’re the ones responsible for the big-picture decisions and will be first in the firing line if things don’t go as per plan and fans are disillusioned with their running of the club.
