Ex-Lions punter lands with Panthers on one-year deal

Less than a week after his release from the Buffalo Bills, veteran punter Sam Martin has found a new team.

Martin has agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers worth up to $3 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who first reported the signing.

Before his three-year stint with the Bills, Martin spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Detroit Lions, who selected him in the fifth round (No. 165 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

After his contract with Detroit expired in 2019, Martin signed a three-year deal with the Denver Broncos but was released after two seasons in 2022.

Last season with Buffalo, Martin averaged 46.7 yards per punt, with a long of 65 yards. Of his 54 punts, 25 landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
