Brian Laudrup has predicted who Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises may want as the next Rangers manager.

Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe are eyeing a takeover at Ibrox, and the new prospective owners will evidently have a big decision to make regarding the next permanent manager.

Patrick Stewart appointed Barry Ferguson temporarily until the end of the season after sacking Philippe Clement.

The American owners will arguably have their own ideas if and when they arrive, but they could already have a candidate in mind.

Ferguson could potentially be a candidate for the American owners to be the permanent manager at the Glaswegian outfit, Laudrup says.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

The former Denmark international believes impressive displays against Fenerbahce and Celtic in the coming fixtures would possibly make the interim manager a strong contender to remain beyond this season.

Laudrup feels that Ferguson would have a good chance of staying in the Ibrox dugout for longer under the prospective new owners if things go his way.

Speaking to Record Sport (12 March), the 56-year-old said: “There are a lot of things up in the air around Rangers with talk of a takeover. The Americans will obviously have their own opinions.

“Rangers can go to Celtic on Sunday and lose. That’s possible. But it’s about what kind of team and what kind of performance you see.

“And if you can see that the team are in a better place than they were two or three weeks ago, then you can start talking about, ‘Could Barry have a future with his management team?’

“It would be very interesting to see what he could do with a transfer window, going into a new season perhaps with new owners at the club. But we all know it’s all about the next two games. Normally we always say it’s about the next game but, for me, it’s about the next two games.

“If he can get through them by at least showing that his team is up for it, he’s got a good chance.”

Europa League success to guarantee Ferguson Ibrox stay

The Light Blues beat Fenerbahce 3-1 in the Europa League at the Ulker Stadium on 6 March, increasing their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Ferguson has an advantage going into the second leg against Jose Mourihnho’s team at Ibrox on 13 March, and victory is in the Gers’ hands.

The Bears have nothing left to play for in the Scottish Premiership, sitting 16 points behind Celtic in the league table.

Queen’s Park eliminated the Glaswegian outfit from the Scottish Cup under Clement, which was one of the final nails in the coffin for the Belgian manager.

The Light Blues’ performances this season have been inconsistent, and Ferguson faced similar issues in his first two games against Kilmarnock and Motherwell.

While it would be surprising to see the US consortium stick with the interim manager if and when they complete their takeover, success in the Europa League may give them no other option.

The Ibrox faithful seem to be fully behind Ferguson, and they would undoubtedly want to see him continue if he can bring success to the Bears at the end of the campaign.
