Levi Colwill makes Chelsea squad's stance on Enzo Maresca clear after fan complaints

Levi Colwill has launched a strong defence of Chelsea’s style by hailing Enzo Maresca for his “amazing” ideas.

Head coach Maresca appeared at odds with some impatient supporters after last Sunday’s narrow win over Leicester City by suggesting some have unrealistic expectations of what he called 'PlayStation football'.

And before Thursday night's Conference League clash with Copenhagen, centre-back Colwill had nothing but words of praise for the tactician.

“The way he teaches us every day is amazing, it’s been top,” Colwill said. “I really enjoy playing under him and I know everyone in the changing room does too. Over time we’ll get better and better because of him. I’m always going back to the coach because I love the way he plays football, I love the ideas he has. I think he’s amazing.”

The chief complaint of fans is that Chelsea, who sit fourth in the Premier League, are performing with too much caution.

But Colwill continued: “The ideas he brings to training to help us break teams down is all down to him. The games we’re winning and playing through other teams is of course because we’re top teams but he also sets us up correctly on the pitch to score goals.

“We’ve got amazing players that will help us pull off what he wants us to do but at the end of the day it comes down to. As a person he is top, he pushes us every day. He’s serious at times but he can also be a bit of a joker with us. He’s got a great balance.”

Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku and Reece James have all shaken off illnesses and are in contention to face Copenhagen.

Chelsea travel to second-placed Arsenal on Sunday afternoon but Maresca insisted that his entire focus is on progressing in Europe, with the Blues enjoying a 2-1 lead from the first leg.

“The priority for us is this because it’s the next one, the most important one. Then after we start to think about Arsenal,” Maresca said.

“Now before the break we have two games, two efforts, Thursday night and Sunday, and then we have the international break and can recover energy, recover players, and then go for the last sprint.”
