Liverpool eyeing Liga Portugal ace to replace South American star

Liverpool are cruising in the Premier League this season. The Reds sit at the top of the table with a 15-point cushion over second place Arsenal with only nine games left. However, the English club are already said to be looking to sign reinforcements in the summer for Arne Slot to help bolster the attack.

Arne Slot’s side has enjoyed a successful domestic campaign till now, with the club already in the Carabao Cup final and also cruising towards a 20th league title. But it has not always been an easy ride for many Liverpool attackers. Luiz Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota have not had a successful campaign so far.

Liverpool might end up replacing Darwin Nunez with Viktor Gyokeres.

Darwin Nunez has struggled for consistency at Liverpool.

It is also being reported by Sky Switzerland that Darwin Nunez wants to leave the club after getting tired of the ‘gloomy’ English weather. The ex-Benfica striker has had more downs than ups in a Liverpool shirt and was one of the two players that missed a penalty in the shootout against PSG last night.

As per Sofascore, the 25-year-old striker has found the net just seven times and provided just five assists in 39 games played in all competitions. This is not a good look on the striker and it is clear that Nunez has lacked confidence this season.

Liverpool eyeing Nunez replacement

Liverpool are already planning a replacement for Darwin Nunez. The Reds feel that Nunez might finally move on from Anfield in the summer after not having the impact the club expected him to make.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Liverpool striker was almost on the verge of joining a Saudi club in January. But Liverpool pulled the trigger as they could not find a replacement and the Uruguay international had to stay at the club till the summer.

But now Portuguese paper A Bola reports that Liverpool have identified Viktor Gyokeres to potentially replace the outgoing Nunez. The Sporting Lisbon star has been one of the best forwards in Europe this year and it is also being reported that the striker prefers a move to England.

The Reds will face competition from a number of teams for the 26-year-old’s signature in the summer. A Bola also reports that Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid are also looking to sign the Sweden international to bolster their attacking lineup.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel,

“The package Sporting could accept, could be around €65m to €75m. That’s a very good price for one of the best strikers in Europe in terms of numbers. All the top clubs are going very strong for Gyokeres in the summer.”

Nunez relies heavily on pace, off-the-ball runs, and instinctive finishing. In contrast, Gyokeres excels at holding up the ball, bringing teammates into play, and using his strength to shield possession. His physicality enables him to win duels and create attacking opportunities for others, perfect for Liverpool when facing stubborn, deep-lying defences.

More so, Gyokeres consistently wins aerial duels, making him an asset during set-pieces and crosses, areas Nunez, despite his physical stature, hasn’t consistently maximized. This would add another dimension to Liverpool’s attack

Viktor Gyokeres has been in red hot form for Sporting, as well as his national team Sweden. As per Sofascore, the 26-year-old has scored 37 goals and provided eight assists in 37 games this season. The Swede will be a perfect replacement for Nunez this summer if Liverpool end up signing him. Their attack will be formidable and he will fit perfectly into Slot’s system, playing as a target man up top.
