'More money than god': Simon Jordan is out there speaking sense again regarding Newcastle…

· March 12 2025, 20:00

Love him or hate him, Simon Jordan always has an interesting take on football's biggest issues and while he's had some crazy takes on Newcastle United in the past, he has been a good mouthpiece for the club lately, highlighting the issues the club are facing.

Since the PIF-backed takeover, TalkSPORT's Simon Jordan has had plenty to say about Newcastle United, initially bumping heads with former co-owner Amanda Staveley.

Lately, though, when the former Crystal Palace owner has popped up on our radar, we've found ourselves agreeing with what he has to say, especially when he's ranting about the likes of Associated Party Transactions and Profit and Sustainability Rules which have been used to keep Newcastle United out of reach of the 'Big Six".

Speaking on TalkSPORT yesterday, Jordan once again took aim at PSR and used Newcastle's vastly wealthy owners as an example of the ridiculousness that 'sustainability' has anything to do with it.

Simon Jordan has baulked at the idea that 'sustainability' has anything to do with PSR as it stands

We've said it many times before, our owners could spend more money than any other Premier League club without any worry of financial trouble, so as far as sustainability goes, we've got that well and truly covered. Which is exactly the point Simon Jordan has now made.

"I'd like to think that the governance of the game changes I don't know how anybody can keep a straight face and suggest that a big part of the reason why we have governance is for sustainability and then argue that the people who own Newcastle aren't sustainable.

"Ultimately, the sustainability of Newcastle is pretty much wrapped in copper bottom protection. They have got people who own them that have got more money than God and are quite prepared to fund them and quite prepared to give up guarantees to make sure that Newcastle, as a club, are not put into any existential jeopardy by their spending patterns.

"So the sustainability argument is just nonsense. It's just a nonsensical, stupid, governance argument that's actually unwinding some of the best parts of the Premier League."

The Premier League have admitted they got PSR wrong but still persist with hit

It doesn't seem to matter how many people speak out about it, though, the Premier League seems reluctant to climb down and change, despite Richard Masters' recent admission that they perhaps got it wrong.

Next season was supposed to see a change in the rules, but the Premier League have instead decided to stick with things as they are, not even raising the loss limit to come more in line with inflation.

It's an absolute joke and we know that PSR was implemented before our takeover, but the hoops that the Premier League seem to be jumping through to keep it in place to prevent Newcastle from expanding, well, it's hard not to take it a bit personally at this point. After all, we now know with 100% certainty that the Associated Party Transaction rules were brought in specifically to stop Newcastle from spending.
