Eagles, Ben VanSumeren agree to one-year contract

The Philadelphia Eagles and exclusive-rights free agent Ben VanSumeren have agreed to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

This news is an incredibly unsurprising development; it would’ve been a major shock if the Eagles didn’t tender BVS.

Here’s what we wrote about his outlook back on March 4:

BVS is an exclusive-rights free agent, which means the Eagles will offer him a one-year minimum contract tender and he’ll sign it because his alternative is no longer playing in the NFL. It remains to be seen if BVS will miss offseason practice time while recovering from his injury. If healthy, he figures to be a solid backup who mainly contributes on special teams. It remains to be seen if the Eagles will utilize a fullback moving forward or if that was more of a Kellen Moore thing.

With the Eagles not retaining fill-in starter Oren Burks and Nakobe Dean likely not ready to play in Week 1 next season, BVS could compete with Jeremiah Trotter Jr. for the starting role next to Zack Baun.

If he’s not starting, he figures to serve as a special teams contributor who might also see some occasional snaps as a fullback.

BVS will be a restricted free agent after the 2025 season.
