Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk mulls over approach from Al Hilal

Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk is in the final year of his contract with the Reds and is allowed to speak to other clubs regarding a summer move.

The Liverpool captain has remained tight-lipped regarding his contract situation. However, according to L’Equipe, the Dutch international defender is mulling over an approach from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

Van Dijk is one of three key Liverpool players who could walk away from Anfield this summer for free. Even though all reports indicate he wants to stay, the club has yet to present him with a suitable offer.

Unsurprisingly, suitors will be lining up to take Van Dijk, arguably the best centre-half in Europe. The 33-year-old helped Liverpool keep six clean sheets in nine appearances in the UEFA Champions League this season, winning 62% of his aerial and 73% of his ground duels.

The former Celtic and Southampton defender has been equally stellar in the Premier League, helping to keep 12 clean sheets in 29 outings while winning 71% of his aerial and 66% of his ground duels.

The Saudi Pro League wants to add more quality as it bids to raise its profile, and Van Dijk would be a fantastic coup. Reigning champions Al Hilal face a fierce fight to retain the title, with Al Ittihad sitting four points clear at the summit.

Al Hilal have conceded more goals than the rest of the top five, and if there is one man who can help improve that record, it is the Liverpool defender.

Van Dijk would be a superb addition to the club, pairing with former Chelsea and Napoli man Kalidou Koulibaly to form arguably the most formidable defence in the land, at least on paper.

It remains to be seen whether Van Dijk will choose to move to the Middle East or stay in Europe. He will likely get more offers on the table to consider.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos spoke to him after Liverpool’s Champions League exit, leading to rumours of a transfer to the Ligue 1 behemoths.

Other European giants like Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich could enter the mix, too.
