The Dallas Cowboys suffered an absurd amount of injuries in 2024, and Demarcus Lawrence was no exception. The veteran played in only four games last year but was reasonably productive during his abbreviated time on the field. During his truncated season, the edge defender recorded three sacks, 14 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hits. The Cowboys themselves struggled, missing the playoffs in what was ultimately the final year of the Mike McCarthy Era.
Demarcus Lawrence originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Selected by the Dallas Cowboys, the Boise State product started his career in unremarkable fashion, appearing in just seven games as a rookie while failing to record a sack. However, he broke out in 2017, appearing in all 16 games while making 13 starts and recording eight sacks, 55 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and 12 quarterback hits. Unfortunately, the Cowboys themselves struggled as Tony Romo missed most of the season with a back injury.
Lawrence regressed in 2016 but put together his best play in 2017. Making his first Pro Bowl and earning Second-Team All-Pro honors, the pass rusher finished the season with 14.5 sacks, 58 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and 26 quarterback hits. This strong play paired with the offensive improvements from rookie quarterback Dak Prescott led this team to the playoffs but they ultimately came short of reaching the NFC Championship Game.
The pass rusher followed this up with a 10-sack season in 2017 and remained effective throughout the later part of his career. Prior to his injury-plagued 2024, Lawrence made two consecutive Pro Bowls in the 2022 and 2023 seasons while establishing himself as one of the league’s better all-around edge defenders.
Since signing his rookie contract, Demarcus Lawrence has appeared in 141 games while making 123 starts. While on the field, the Boise State product has recorded 61.5 sacks and 126 quarterback hits.
