Kristaps Porzingis illness: Boston Celtics big man downgraded for Thunder game

BOSTON — Kristaps Porzingis is officially out and downgraded as the Celtics face the Thunder at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at TD Garden. The big man had been listed as questionable on the injury report heading into Wednesday’s game.

The Celtics had two other players on the injury report in Jayson Tatum (questionable) and Jaylen Brown (probable). But as expected for those two, they were upgraded to available for the marquee matchup against the Thunder.

Porzingis will now miss his seventh straight game as he hasn’t played since Feb. 26 in Detroit. The big man originally sat the Raptors game Feb. 25 as a late scratch because of the illness. He then played in Detroit the day after, but has missed every game since then because of his viral illness.

Porzingis released a statement on social media Monday talking about his illness, giving an update for the fans. He’s been around the team in recent days in hopes of returning back to action.

“I have been dealing with some viral illness that we haven’t been able to fully identify yet,” Porzingis posted on social media. “I am recovering and getting better. But still working my way back to full strength to help this team. Thanks for support and Im hoping for a healthy return soon.”

The Celtics face the Thunder for a matchup between some of the best teams in the NBA. The Thunder have been the West’s best by far as they bring in a 53-12 record into Wednesday’s game. The C’s are reigning champs, but they’re looking to avenge their loss to the Thunder back in Oklahoma City in January.
