A one goal advantage is meaningless in the UEFA Champions League, especially in a Madrid-derby away from home. Real Madrid would need to put a real shift in to progress into the quarter finals. Luka Modrić started in the middle to help the team achieve this, with Brahim Díaz dropped after starring in the first leg. Castilla icon Gonzalo García started on the bench. Luka captained the side.
Atlético Madrid were ahead before I had even turned towards the television, as Conor Gallagher caught Los Blancos sleeping to stab home. From here, the home side settled into their usual shape, and Real Madrid did not create a single chance all half. To make matters worse, Atlético even looked sharper in attack as well. Half-time, 1-0 - and 2-2 on aggregate.
The second half was just as bleak, with the home team again looking stronger - and Real creating very little. Real Madrid were handed a lifeline when one flash of quality from Kylian Mbappé was enough to see him fouled inside the area. For some reason, the Frenchman was not the one to step up and take the penalty. Vinícius Júnior instead blasted the ball way over the bar, to the excitement of the home crowd. Atlético almost stole the tie in the closing stages, but the game was destined for extra-time. 1-0 (2-2) at full-time.

Extra-time consisted of poor body language from certain Real Madrid players, and tired sequences of play. The visitors had no choice but to go through penalties to try and overcome their rivals. A Julian Álvarez controversial disallowed penalty aided Real Madrid to a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory on penalties, as they progressed to the next round.
