For the first time in his career, cornerback Jonathan Jones will play for a team other than the New England Patriots. According to Jeremy Fowler, Jones and the Washington Commanders agree on a one-year deal
Jones, 31, has spent all nine seasons of his NFL career with the Patriots. He was undrafted out of Auburn in 2016 and has made a nice career for himself after not being selected in the draft.
He has played 132 career games and has appeared in 14-plus games in eight of his nine seasons. Over those 132 games, he has collected 11 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, and 57 passes defended. Jones set career highs in all three of those categories in 2022, his best season as a pro.
Jones will be a welcome addition to a Washington secondary that ranked third in pass defense in 2024. He will join Marshon Lattimore and Mike Sainristil as the primary cornerbacks for the Commanders and will replace the likes of Benjamin St-Juste and Mike Davis, much to the delight of Commanders fans.
Any sort of identical replication of Jones' stellar 2022 season should put Washington in a position to reach the postseason in consecutive seasons for the first time since it went in three straight years from 1990 to 1992.
