Real Madrid set up a Champions League quarter-final clash with Arsenal after they sealed a controversial 4-2 penalty shootout victory over rivals Atletico Madrid to continue the defence of their European crown.

Julian Alvarez had fired his penalty, Atletico's second, into the roof of the net but then saw it disallowed by VAR after slipping during his run-up and touching the ball twice.

Former Real player Marcos Llorente slammed his spot-kick against the crossbar before Antonio Rudiger stepped up and squeezed the decisive spot-kick past Jan Oblak despite the goalkeeper going the right way and getting a hand to it.

Conor Gallagher had fired Atletico in front on the night just 27 seconds into the match and it stayed 1-0 for another 119 minutes to send it to penalties, with the tie 2-2 on aggregate.

Real are bidding for a record-extending 16th European Cup win and the Spanish side will face Arsenal in the last eight.
