Former Alabama All-American linebacker C.J. Mosley was released by the New York Jets on Wednesday, becoming the latest big-name player in the Jets’ offseason purge.

Mosley, who was an All-American in Tuscaloosa in 2012 and 2013 and won 2 national titles in 2011 and 2012, had spent the past 6 seasons with the Jets and was one of the franchise’s most popular captains. The 32-year-old native of Mobile, Ala., was sent packing in another salary cap move by New York.

Mosley’s popularity in New York was on full display by the Jets’ social media in Wednesday’s announcement. The tweet simply read: “To the captain, you gave this organization everything you had.”

Mosley played in just 4 games last season because of a toe injury and later dealt with a herniated disk in his neck.

The Jets’ new regime that’s taking over made up of general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn already released star wide receiver Davante Adams, who has since signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Also, future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers was told last month that the team was moving forward without him. He was expected to be released on Wednesday night, part of the flurry on the first day of free agency.

Mosley restructured his contract last offseason and was due to make $4.25 million guaranteed this season, which would count $12.8 million against the salary cap. As a post-June 1 cut, Mosley’s cap hit would drop to $8.8 million this year.

Mosley spent the first 5 seasons of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens and is a 5-time Pro Bowl selection.
