Patriots captain Deatrich Wise Jr. reportedly signs with Commanders in free agency

After eight seasons and one Super Bowl win, Deatrich Wise Jr.’s New England Patriots career has found an end. The 30-year-old defensive lineman is joining the Washington Commanders on a one-year free agency contract.

According to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the deal carries a maximum value of $5 million.

Wise Jr. first arrived in New England as a member of the team’s four-player draft class in 2017. Its only member to make any noteworthy contributions through the years, and in fact stay with the team throughout his rookie contract and beyond, he appeared in a combined 132 regular season and playoff games as a Patriot.

Initially starting out as an edge in a 4-3 defense, he developed into a versatile interior lineman capable of playing several techniques up front. As such, he registered 36 total sacks, 5 forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown over his career with the club.

Wise Jr. also was voted a captain each of the last three seasons, and took on a prominent leadership role in what was a challenging post-dynasty transitional era in New England.

Now, he is taking his talents to Washington, reuniting with fellow long-time Patriots defender Jonathan Jones. Like Wise Jr., Jones also agreed to a one-year deal with the Commanders on Wednesday.
