SINGAPORE - No injuries were reported when a fire - likely of electrical origin - broke out in a condominium unit in Balestier on March 12.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the blaze at 20, Jalan Raja Udang - the address of 16-storey Global Ville - at about 5.15pm.
The fire involved the contents of a 15th floor unit’s utility room and an adjoining service yard, and was put out using a water jet.
One should not overload power sockets, and should switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use, SCDF said.
In videos of the incident seen by The Straits Times, black smoke can be seen from afar billowing from the top of the condominium.
In 2024, the [SCDF responded to 1,990 fire calls](https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/fires-involving-amds-up-again-in-2024-with-21-8-rise-in-cases-more-people-died-in-fires), of which 968 were for fires in residential premises. The latter figure remained largely unchanged from 2023, when 970 residential fires were recorded.
Fires due to unattended cooking and of electrical origin are the most common causes of home fires - making up 35 per cent and 31 per cent of reports received by the SCDF in 2024, respectively.
