CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte Baseball scored 11 runs in the first three innings and fired a two-hit game defensively to cruise to a 12-0 victory over Davidson in seven innings on Wednesday evening (March 12) from Hayes Stadium.
Charlotte (8-7) used 10 hits and eight walks to bring home the 12 runs, crossing the double-digit mark in hits for the fourth time this season to invoke the run rule of a 10-run lead in the seventh or later. Thad Ector and Cody Gunderson combined for four of the hits with two for each, including Ector's second home run of the season with a monster shot to left as part of a four-RBI game for him.
"I think that was a great response from our guys," head coach Robert Woodard said after the win. "It was our first Wednesday game of the year. You get back late after the game last night, go to class, and then you're back out here at The Hayes. It was an awesome crowd tonight and great weather. The guys' energy was great tonight from the beginning. We worked on some things right before the game and the guys picked it up like it was practice and brought it into the game - which doesn't always happen. We saw some things we really liked in terms of adjustments and I give our guys a ton of credit; they came out ready to play and they never let up.
Chandler Riley, Noah Furcht, Dawson Bryce, Carson Bayne, Caleb Estes, and Connor Maryniak all had one hit each to push the Green and White up to double digits. Furcht, Gunderson, Poteet, Bayne, and Reid Haire all had RBIs while Furcht touched home plate four times for the most runs any individual 49er has scored in a single game all season.
The Niners also rode strong pitching in the win, with six different arms combining to hold Davidson (4-11) to just two hits in the contest while fanning a season-high 18 batters in just seven innings of work. A pair of Niner debutants bookended the outing for CLT, with Trip DoVale getting the start and Matt Garcia finishing it out in their first appearances wearing the 9 Across The Chest.
"Trip was a big recruit for us and was recovering from some injury stuff in the fall," Woodard said of his starter. "He was a little behind guys because of that but we felt like he was more than ready to go after seeing him pitch live at bats and bullpen sessions for the last few weeks against our own hitters. It was great seeing him do it against another uniform tonight."
DoVale punched out five batters in the first two innings before Tanner Kaler struck out the side in the third. Joel Sarver also collected five Ks in two innings of work before three strikeouts from Chase Carson to sit the side down in order in the sixth. Trey Baker fanned the first two batters in the seventh before Garcia finished the game out with a flyball to left to get the Green and White back in the win column.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DoVale struck out the side in the opening frame and Charlotte's bats wasted little time getting the scoring started with a pair of runs coming across in the bottom half of the first. Ector drew a one-out walk and came home on a triple off the chalk of the line in right from Furcht before Gunderson brought him the final 90 feet home with a single up the middle.
After another strong inning from DoVale, the Niners broke it wide open in the second with six runs for the second-highest-scoring inning in a game for CLT this year. Maryniak and Riley both singled with one out to put a pair on and both advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Ector then sent one up the middle that bounced off the diving Davidson infielder for a double that scored both runners to make it 4-0.
Back-to-back walks taken by Furcht and Gunderson kept the inning going and a single to left by Bryce loaded them up. A wild pitch brought a run in by moving everyone up 90 feet and a chopped single to the shortstop from Bayne scored another run before a second wild pitch brought the sixth and final run of the frame across the plate for the Niners.
The production continued in the third after three strikeouts from Kaler, starting with a two-run homer by Ector. Riley was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and then Ector got a pitch he could mash, turning on one 392 feet over the wall in left. A walk, a single, and a hit batter loaded the bases up again, setting up a sacrifice fly from Poteet to add to the lead.
Davidson picked up its second and final hit of the game to start the fourth inning before three consecutive strikeouts from Sarver while the Wildcats defensively sat CLT down in order for the only time in the bottom half of the fourth.
Charlotte scored its final run of the game in the fifth without collecting a hit as Furcht worked a lead-off walk and moved all the way up to third on a hit batter and another walk before coming home on an RBI-groundout from Haire in the latter's second plate appearance of the season.
Carson picked up three more strikeouts in the sixth before Baker and Garcia combined for the 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, keeping the 12-run lead intact and ending the game early with the run rule.
