On 12 March, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs MATSUMOTO Hisashi attended the fifth Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue, which was held in Vilnius, the Republic of Lithuania with the attendance of Mr. Sigitas Mitkus, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Laimonas Talat-Kelpša, Political Director of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Martin Roger, Undersecretary of Political Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, and Mr. Ivars Lasis, Undersecretary of State, Political Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.
The heads of delegations discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and concurred that it is important that ongoing diplomatic efforts among all countries bring an end the long-standing hostilities, and lead to the realization of a just and lasting peace as soon as possible.
The heads of delegations also reaffirmed their shared recognition that security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is inseparable, and that there is a need for even greater security cooperation between Japan and the Baltic countries than there ever. In the economic field, in addition to strengthening exchanges, the heads of delegations confirmed the possibility of cooperation in the areas of start-ups, strengthening regional connectivity, and energy-related projects.
Furthermore, the heads of delegations also discussed the situation in the Indo-Pacific, and confirmed to continue working closely together in addressing issues related to China and in dealing with North Korea, including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
The heads of delegations decided to hold the sixth Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue in Latvia.

The “Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue” was established by the leaders of Japan and the Baltic countries in order to further promote Japan-Baltic cooperation in a wide range of areas when former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo visited the countries in January 2018 for the first time as Prime Minister of Japan.
