Deebo Samuel gave Brock Purdy one final piece of advice before he fled California for greener pastures in Washington. Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders Wednesday as the league opened its business for the year.
Samuel communicated with Purdy through social media. He told Purdy one thing on Instagram which Purdy is already in the process of doing.
"Get what you deserve family," Samuel wrote on Instagram.
Purdy is currently in negotiations on an extension which is projected to make him the highest paid player in NFL history. His annual average value should surpass that of Josh Allen and Dak Prescott.
49ers general manager John Lynch pulled off the trade which brought back a fifth-round pick in April's draft. He made the trade primarily for salary cap reasons and also to give Samuel a new beginning.
"He's asked for a fresh start, and we're going to honor that," 49ers general manager John Lynch said.
The quarterback and receiver duo became tight since Purdy broke into the league prior to the 2022 season. Purdy and Samuel shared two NFC Championship Game appearances. They almost won Super Bowl 58 after the 2023 season.
Samuel will now have the potential to line up with wide receiver Terry McLaurin. He will be catching passes from second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The receiver was drafted by San Francisco in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He became one of Purdy's top playmakers, but struggled in 2024. Accordingly, his production fell off.

Samuel finished the season with just four touchdowns-his lowest total since missing nine games due to injury in 2020. Ultimately, he requested a trade afterward.
The trade was consummated on March 1, at the NFL Scouting Combine, but did not become official until Wednesday when the NFL opened for business.
