Oliver Miller, former Phoenix Suns center, passes away at 54

The basketball community has lost a legend today. The team confirmed that former Sun Oliver Miller passed away at the age of 54.

He was battling cancer in Phoenix, according to a post from Miller on his X account on February 27th.

Miller played in Phoenix for three seasons, spanning from 1992 to 94 and 1999 to 2000. He was drafted by Phoenix with the 22nd pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. “Big O” was an integral part of the Suns’ 1993 Finals run.

Jerry Colangelo on Oliver Miller’s impact during the Suns’ 1993 NBA Finals run:

“He played bigger than his body in size, believe it or not. He had long arms, great hands, he was a terrific passer and he was a rebounder and could block shots. Although, he wasn’t a big jumper. He was unique talent and I would say this: without him, I’m not sure how far we would’ve gotten. He played an integral part on those teams for a few years.”

He was a terrific basketball player, and by all accounts from what I’ve heard in Suns circles, a terrific human being. He has received an outpour of support from former friends, teammates, coaches, colleagues, and more.

Eddie Johnson and Cedric Ceballos took to X/Twitter to share their thoughts and support.

I am so sad to report we have lost another @NBA Fraternity member! Nine year veteran Oliver Miller has passed away at age 54! Going to miss you Big O. . RIP

If Miller was before your time, like he was for me, then this is a great watch.

Taking a trip down memory lane is always fun for those who remember watching him play live. The Suns' 1993 Finals run happened the year I was born. I’ve watched plenty of film on that team, but this game stood out.

Oliver Miller’s Game 5.

Rest in peace, Big O.
