Crewmen of Dutch dredger admit fault over oil spill in Singapore

**ISTANBUL**

Four Dutch crew members of the Netherlands-flagged dredger Vox Maxima, which collided with another vessel in Singapore in 2024, admitted Wednesday to failing to fulfill their duties properly, local daily The Straits Times reported.

The Vox Maxima collided with the Singapore-flagged bunker vessel Marine Honour at Pasir Panjang Terminal, causing significant damage and resulting in the worst oil spill in Singapore in a decade.

The crewmen -- Richard Ouwehand, Martin Hans Sinke, Eric Peijpers and Merijn Heidema -- pleaded guilty to one charge each under the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 for their involvement in the oil spill.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Regina Lim informed the court Wednesday that the clean-up operations took over two months, and the full extent of the oil spill's impact on the coastal and marine environment is still being evaluated.

Lim said the Marine Honour is still undergoing repairs for the damage, with the repair costs expected to exceed S$6.6 million ($4.95 million).

Richard Ouwehand was the master of the Vox Maxima, while Martin Hans Sinke was the vessel’s chief officer and responsible for its navigational watch during the collision.
