Former Patriots starting QB finds a new home out west

Former Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has found a new home.

According to a source, he’s agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers on a two-year deal. He’ll serve as the backup to Brock Purdy.

Jones played his first three seasons in New England before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

He started seven games for the Jaguars, coming on for injured Trevor Lawrence.

Jones only one two of those games.

He threw eight touchdown passes, with eight interceptions. He had a 65.3 completion rate.

Jones, a first-round pick (15th overall) of the Patriots in 2021, was in New England three seasons. His best year was his rookie season, where the team went 10-7 and clinched a playoff berth with Jones under center.

It went downhill from there.

Between injuries, changing offensive coordinators three times in three years, including a stint with Matt Patricia, who was a noted defensive coach, calling the offense, Jones went from promising quarterback to bench warmer.

After an unproductive 2023 season with Bill O’Brien as his offensive coordinator, the Patriots traded Jones to the Jaguars for a 2024 sixth-round pick.

The year Jones was drafted, it was believed the 49ers, picking third overall, might select the Alabama product. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was said to be a fan. Instead, San Francisco chose Trey Lance, who lasted just two seasons.

Four years later, Jones winds up with the Niners.

The deal is for two years at $11.5 million, with $5 million guaranteed.

Career-wise, Jones is 20-29 as a starter. He’s thrown 54 touchdowns with 44 interceptions.
