The escalating challenges posed by climate change and resource depletion have thrust sustainable development into the forefront of global discourse. Amidst these challenges, the valorisation of agro waste emerges as a beacon of transformative potential, offering a pathway to not only alleviate environmental burdens but also to unlock economic opportunities. This proposed Thematic Issue seeks to delve into the multifaceted dimensions of this paradigm shift. Agricultural activities worldwide generate copious amounts of waste, ranging from crop residues and peels to by-products of food processing and oil extraction. Historically overlooked, these remnants have the potential to become veritable treasure troves of resources, ushering in a new era of sustainability and economic prosperity. As the human society stands at the intersection of environmental stewardship and economic innovation, this Thematic Issue aims to explore how the judicious valorisation of agro waste can transcend the traditional concept of waste management and pave the road towards a more sustainable future. Globally, the call for sustainable practices has never been more urgent. The food and agricultural sector, being both a major contributor to waste generation and a critical player in global economies, holds a unique position to address these challenges. Currently, a staggering 1.3 109 ta of food are wasted annually worldwide, with developing nations like India discarding millions of tonnes of vital resources due to inefficiencies in the supply chain and economic constraints. The repercussions of this wastefulness extend beyond the environmental realm to impact the very fabric of societies. Food security, economic stability, and environmental resilience are intricately interlinked, and the valorisation of agro waste emerges as a pivotal strategy to address this nexus. By converting these 'wastes' into valuable products, not only environmental harm is mitigated but also new avenues for economic growth are opened especially in regions grappling with the consequences of inefficiencies in their food systems. This special issue aims to be a comprehensive exploration of the diverse facets of agro waste valorisation. From innovative technologies that harness the potential of waste streams to circular bioeconomy strategies that redefine resource utilization, the issue will showcase the evolving landscape of sustainable practices. Furthermore, the exploration of bio-based products, bioprocessing techniques, and the role of microbial contributions in waste upcycling will underscore the potential for transformative change within various industries.
