Emerging ex-Pittsburgh Steelers coach finds new job in the NFL

Former Pittsburgh Steelers assistant wide receivers coach Blaine Stewart is heading to the NFL and joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stewart was the team’s assistant wide receiver coach for three seasons before departing for West Virginia.

This season, he became the staff’s inside receivers coach after coaching tight ends for his first two seasons, but will now join the Buccaneers. That role will be an assistant capacity, allowing Stewart to head back to the NFL, this time under head coach Todd Bowles.

Stewart had deep connections in Morgantown as his father, Bill Stewart, was the head coach of West Virginia. He played Division-II football at the University of Charleston and played his high school football at Morgantown High School.

The personal connections with the Steelers just started there. Bill Stewart hired Mike Tomlin as the receivers coach at Virginia Military Institute in 1995 when Stewart was head coach of the program. It was Tomlin’s first coaching job out of college.

Stewart spent his first two years of eligibility as a player at James Madison, primarily as the holder on field goals and extra points.
