Newcastle United were said to be winning the race to sign Spanish wonderkid Antonio Cordero despite interest from Spain's top sides.

Malaga's 18-year-old winger has attracted a lot of attention after some strong displays in the Spanish second division, but reports have suggested that Newcastle were set to beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to the youngster's signature this summer.

There were even reports that Cordero and his family had visited the North East to have a look around the club's facilities ahead of a potential summer switch.

Now, Spanish outlet Marca, who continue to claim a strong link between Cordero and Newcastle, are also claiming that a new club has entered the race.

Porto have now joined the race for Antonio Cordero

Portuguese giants Porto have now joined the pursuit with Marca saying they have 'entered the fight strongly'.

Cordero is out of contract in the summer and will no doubt look to assess his options, so when Newcastle are said to have made a 'strong bid' it's obviously all about the hard sell rather than the numbers.

Of course, a decent wage packet would likely sway the youngster's thoughts, but if Newcastle have done their job selling the club and the project, then we stand as good a chance as anyone.

Cordero has already been made aware of the development plan at Newcastle

Rumours were that if Newcastle were to land Cordero he will be loaned out next season to gain more experience.

That would make sense as he's not likely to be ready for the Premier League just yet having only made his name in the Spanish second tier.

Cordero is definitely one for the future, but now we have to ensure we can see off the challenge from Porto.
