Leicester City comments and Chelsea uncertainty hint at Enzo Maresca summer transfer raid

Chelsea’s goalkeeper uncertainty and Enzo Maresca’s continued praise of Mads Hermansen will generate further speculation over a summer transfer move.

Despite reports that Chelsea are not looking to sign a new goalkeeper in 2025, there have been clues that Maresca is not 100 per cent happy with his current options, while the Italian continues to take opportunities to praise Leicester City’s number one.

There were suggestions last summer that Chelsea were considering a move for Hermansen but that City priced them out of a move.

The Dane fits perfectly into Maresca’s style and did terrifically well under him last season. He’s looked at home in the Premier League too.

Even if they stay up, City will likely sell one of their most valuable assets to help with PSR and fund incoming transfer business and Hermansen is the most likely candidate.

But while the reports suggest Chelsea won’t be interested, Maresca’s rotation of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, flitting between his two first-choice keepers, suggests he’s not settled on either.

After Hermansen became the first goalkeeper to save a Cole Palmer penalty at the weekend, Maresca called him “brilliant”.

And again this week, as he previewed Chelsea’s Europa Conference League last-16 second leg against FC Copenhagen, he praised him again.

“Yeah, they’re both very good,” Maresca said when asked about Hermansen and Jorgensen being called up to the Denmark squad.

“Mads last year with us did a fantastic season. Filip this season, when he is playing, he's doing well.

“So they are for me, both very good, both very young, because Mads is 24 now, and Filip is 22.

“So I think Denmark has keepers for many years. They have still the main one (Kasper Schmeichel), but behind him there are two young keepers who could be the future of the international team.”

Sanchez had been Chelsea’s number one but was then dropped, with Jorgensen handed four Premier League games in a row before Sanchez returned to the line-up against City.

In the Conference League, Jorgensen had played every game until the first leg against FC Copenhagen, when Sanchez was between the sticks.

Asked at his press conference on Wednesday which of the two would start, Maresca said: “To be honest with you I didn't decide yet, and we have still more than 24 hours and we can decide one of them. But as I said many times, they are both very good.”
